Crashing Out Is Unthinkable For Italy - Gianluca Zambrotta
Zambrotta confident Italy can avoid the early flight home...
Italy defender Gianluca Zambrotta is thinking the unthinkable - tumbling out of the World Cup - but hopes the team pulls together in an attempt to escape from the clutches of failure.
'Zambro' says now is the time to face up to the hole they have dug themselves, but is confident the team can climb out of it.
"A World Cup exit? Honestly I don't even want to think about that," he told the press.
"We know that it's either in or out, but we are used to these situations and all the criticism.
"We have to think positively and without fear. We think that we can do it, and we need a bit of luck too."
Critics have slammed Italy for being an ageing team, but Zambrotta feels the experienced players have been the better performers thus far.
"I am annoyed that people said I was finished before the World Cup. I have been preparing for this for three months. Have people been watching my World Cup and the way I have played?" he added.
"As for [Fabio] Cannavaro, how can people question him?"
