Italy Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon Diagnosed With Spinal Disc Herniation
But, reports from the ANSA press agency suggest a recovery is possible as the world awaits an official confirmation from team doctor Enrico Castellacci...
Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has a minor spinal disc herniation, according to press agency ANSA following a scan this morning.
Despite the diagnosis, there is hope he will be able to recover sufficiently enough to play a part at some point during the tournament, though there has not been any official confirmation from Italy team doctor Enrico Castellacci - he is expected to hold a press conference later.
The goalkeeper came off at half time on Monday as Italy drew 1-1 with Paraguay. It is said Buffon reported pain in his lower back before the game, but he started nevertheless.
There were reports emerging from Irene that the Italian FA were ready to call Salvatore Sirigu who was the fourth choice before the tournament.
However, FIFA rejected a similar request from France who wanted to replace Cederic Carrasso after he tore a hamstring on Monday.
Under FIFA rules teams are not allowed to replace players once the tournament has started, unless the governing body grants special permission.
