Riccardo Montolivo Has No Hang-Ups Over Taking Andrea Pirlo's Place
Montolivo says he has no issues at taking Pirlo's place if required...
Italy midfielder Riccardo Montolivo is ready to start his first World Cup by filling the gap left by injured Andrea Pirlo, but he insists he is feeling no pressure.
Montolivo is likely to start in place of the Milan man on Monday when the Azzurri take on Paraguay in Group F. Questions have been raised over Marcello Lippi's formations, but Montolivo has repelled the doubts.
"For me this is the most important chance of my career. I am motivated and electrified," he told the press.
"In terms of characteristics I am ready to cover the Pirlo role, but it's obvious the decisions rest with the coach. The role in front of the defence is what suits me most."
Despite a growing regiment of opposition, Montolivo believes his side will prove they have everything under control.
"The scepticism around us will help give us more. For us Italians the criticisms have always been a stimulus," Montolivo continued.
"I have always been criticised over these past two years, but it's not a problem. We want to leave people stunned."
