IItaly coach Marcello Lippi is pleased with the 1-1 draw with Greece in Athens on Wednesday night and he insists equaling Vittorio Pozzo's 31 match unbeaten record as coach of the National side would be worthless had he not won the World Cup in 2006...
La Nazionale came from behind to draw with Otto Rehhagel's men after a well fought battle.
Theofanis Ghekas gave the Greek side the lead on the night with a well taken drive but Luca Toni hit back just minutes later with a niceĀ header.
Lippi is pleased with the result but, more importantly, with the way his side bounced back to share the honours.
"The Pozzo record? I am really happy with this. But what's important is that we won the World Cup during that time otherwise the record would have been worthless," Lippi told Rai Uno.
"We have been trying to reconstuct the team and it has been going well. I am pleased with the way we responded tonight. It was an important game for us even though it was a friendly. However, I would not have made so many changes if I had wanted to win at all costs.
"We created plenty of chances and the team played well considering there were many new players on the night.
The most important thing is that we played as a team."
The coach then had some words on Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi who made his full senior debut as well as Luca Toni who scored his first Azzurri goal in over 697 minutes of football.
"Rossi? He played really well and he tried hard to score," added Lippi.Toni? He always scores and we should have expected it that sooner or later he would have got on the scoresheet.
"Brazil? We will play a friendly with them but teams are always evolving and changing."
Italy's next game is against the Selecao in February.
